Objective:

To write “一期一会” once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, meaning we want to treasure every meeting and encounter we have. It would be amazing if we could share this feeling through this shodo class.

Satomi Kamei’s hope for this shodo class: It might help to in being a meditative and relaxing time for us. Everyone tended to feel hopeless and stressful in this pandemic time.

My first experience of shodo was when I attended my neighbor Fuji Kondou sensei’s class when I was about 7years old in my country Hiroshima Japan. When I was a University student, I took a calligraphy specialist course alongside my major study of Japanese literature, then graduated with a teaching license in Japanese and calligraphy for junior and high school students. After I came to the US for family reasons, I had several opportunities to instruct shodo, and after graduating in studio art at a Univ. in the US, I started teaching watercolor painting and sumi-e as well. Currently, I have the honor of working with prof. Shozo Sato in Champaign,IL, and providing shodo on shikishi for Prof. Kimoko Gunji for her tea lessons. To conclude, my motto for art and instructing is that it would be wonderful if people feel “peace” when they see my works or while making their own works.
