Opening Celebration – Children’s Day

Join Dr. Karen Blake Ruffner, local literacy expert, on a tour of the Garden. Participants will walk through the Garden, stopping along the way to share and write about how the Garden touches the heart. Anyone who is tentative to commit pen to paper will see how easy it is to become a writer through this sensory experience. This class is intended for participants ages 18 and older.

Tranquility Walk

Discover the transformative, restorative and healing powers of nature on the 1.5 hour silent walking/sitting/walking meditation. A “self guide” booklet will be given to each participant so that they may repeat the experience on their own at any time. Dress appropriately for whatever the weather brings, including insect protection. Registration is required, as the group size is limited.

Enjoy the music of night creatures in the garden under the full moon. We’ll eavesdrop on the bats that hunt over the Garden ponds while watching the sun set and the full moon rise. Dancing in the Gardens is a fusion dance event held outdoors in the Pavilion on the last Wednesday of the month, May through October, from 7:30-10:30PM. Each session is $5 and includes a dance lesson. Fusion dancing is a blend of different dance styles and music varieties - all levels of dance experience are welcome. This is a non-alcoholic event. Please park in the east overflow parking lot and dress for the outdoors.

Sumi-e, the Japanese word for black ink painting, focuses on the beauty of each individual stroke of the brush as it captures the essence of nature. Ikebana Workshops – Japanese Flower Arranging

Learn the practice of Ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging. Classes are taught by regional Masters in the art of Ikebana. Students need to bring a 3″ kenzan (available in Anderson Japanese Gardens’ gift shop), a long baking dish and scissors. Price includes flowers used for Ikebana display. Participants will bring home their arrangements at the end of class.

Young Rembrandts provides a fun and creative environment where children learn and improve drawing skills and art techniques, while expressing creativity in a positive environment. Japanese Summer Camp is a four-day class that focuses on the culture, traditions and art that is unique to Japan. Children ages 7 and up will explore the Garden and receive an exclusive tour of Anderson Japanese Gardens’ 16th century-style Guest House. They will also learn about Japanese tea ceremony, pop culture such as anime and manga, traditional Japanese Bon Dance, dressing in kimono, origami and create their own bento box lunch.

Etagami Picture Letters Workshop

Etegami is a Japanese folk art consisting of brush painted picture greetings which include calligraphy and a variety of subjects from nature. Subjects from nature such as fish, birds, bamboo, flowers and landscape will be demonstrated by National Watercolor Society Signature Instructor, Stella Dobbins. Access to the Gardens prior to the class is included in the class fee. One-half hour lunch is on your own. A Supply Kit ($25) is available by advance reservation with the Instructor.
