March 28, 2020: Rikyuki-A Memorial Tea Gathering

The Anderson Japanese Gardens Tea Study Group hosts a special tea gathering to honor the life of Sen Rikyu (1522-1591), the founder of the Sen family and one of the most influential and innovative tea masters in the history of Chado, the Japanese Way of Tea. The present Grand Tea Master of the Urasenke Tradition of Tea is Sen Soshitsu, the 16th generation descendant of Sen Rikyu.

Following a presentation on the life of Rikyu and the significance of observing this historical memorial day, Professor and Tea Master Kimiko Gunji will prepare a bowl of matcha (powdered green tea) to be offered in memory of Sen Rikyu. Following the tea procedure, all attendees will be served a special sweet called Rikyu manju and their own bowl of matcha.

Space is limited and registration is required. Please bring a pair of clean white socks to wear indoors. Shoes are not permitted in the Guest House.
