Jamie Thayer is returning to Anderson Japanese Gardens to reprise the children’s programs she began about 20 years ago when she was the program director at here at Anderson Japanese Gardens. She recently retired from teaching world geography at Eisenhower Middle School and is anxious to again share her love of Japan and gardens with children.

She furthered her knowledge of Asia when she was chosen to attend two institutes at the University of Washington – one on teaching about Japan and one on China. She has completed her master’s degree in education and travelled to Asia, Europe, and Central America through teaching fellowships.

Japanese Summer School is coming to Anderson Gardens! Summer school will introduce various aspects of Japanese culture through enjoyable activities in the visitor center as well as daily trips into the garden. Activities will include a study of sumo wrestling, writing and speaking Japanese, math in Japanese, Japanese radio exercises, using the Japanese abacus (soroban), Japanese folk tales, origami, and eating with chopsticks. Summer school will conclude with a bento box Japanese lunch that will be eaten using chopsticks.

Classes will be held Monday Through Thursday from 8:30 to 11:30 the weeks of June 18 and 25. The cost for class is $90 and $80 for members.

Classes are limited to 20 students.

Class participants must be in the 3rd, 4th or 5th grade.

Keiko Hall is a Japanese language Instructor and has been teaching origami for more than 10 years. Origami (ori meaning “folding” and kami meaning “paper” is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century. Keiko teaches easy origami for kids and adults any levels. No previous experience is required and returning students are welcome.

Limited to twelve students, ages 7 years and up.

Students will gain additional insight about Japanese culture and customs inside the traditional Japanese guest house.

Japanese Snacks will be provided

This will be a very unique experience for those who sign up for this event. Great for home schooled students.

japaneselanguage tutoring

Now there is a chance for people who are interested in Japanese and would like to learn more about the culture as they start to learn how to read, write, and speak Japanese. Instructor Keiko Hall is a native Japanese speaker from Tokyo. The course will cover reading and writing of Hiragana and Katakana. There are three different character sets in Japanese. Hiragana is basic syllables. Katakana is the same, except it is used for words adapted from other languages. At the end of the course students will begin to study Kanji. Kanji is the use of Chinese characters or ideographs. Each Kanji has one or more meanings and several pronunciations. Students will learn greetings, numbers, time, simple sentences, and noun and verb usage. The classes will include many crossword puzzles and word searches that make it fun to practice Japanese writing. For extra practice, students will be introduced to on-line computer games in Japanese. Also included will be a tour of the gardens and the Guest House,where the students will learn more about Japanese culture and customs.

For ages 11 years and older limited to six students
